The Malankara Catholic Church and its families
The Syro Malankara Catholic Church is among the smaller of the Kerala churches, which makes a dedicated search more valuable here than almost anywhere.
The Reunion tradition
The Malankara Catholic Church came into being through the Reunion Movement of 1930, when a portion of the Malankara Orthodox Church entered communion with Rome while retaining the West Syriac liturgy and the customs that went with it. It is Catholic in communion and Malankara in rite, and families are conscious of both halves of that.
The church traces its origins, like the other Malankara churches, to the preaching of St Thomas, and retains that apostolicity as part of its identity.
Where the families are
The community is concentrated in the Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta and Kollam region, with the major archeparchies at Trivandrum and Tiruvalla. Beyond Kerala there are established communities in Delhi, the Gulf states, North America and Europe.
Because the community is comparatively small and widely dispersed, families searching locally often meet no one suitable at all. Beginning from a pool where the church is already common ground removes that problem entirely.
Betrothal and crowning
The betrothal and the marriage crowning are distinct celebrations in the Malankara rite, and the liturgy shapes how an alliance proceeds. Families usually begin with a formal meeting, move to the betrothal once both sides are settled, and fix the wedding date with the parish.
Where both families follow the same order, a good deal of the negotiation that arises in inter-church alliances simply does not come up.
